Farmer-based financing of operations in the Niger Valley irrigation schemes AgEcon
Abernethy, Charles L.; Sally, Hilmy; Lonsway, Kurt; Maman, Chegou.
Presents the results of case-studies of the functioning of four pump-based irrigation systems in the Niger River Valley. Prospects for sustainability are analyzed, especially in the light of the government's policy of promoting irrigator organizations to take over responsibilities for operation and maintenance.

Improving agricultural productivity for poverty alleviation through integrated service provision with public-private sector partnerships: examples and issues. AgEcon
Hussain, Intizar; Perera, L.R..
Enduring low agricultural productivity is one of the major causes of rural poverty in South Asia. Based on a review of recent empirical studies, this paper focuses on three key questions: (1) why is agricultural productivity low in the region?; (2) what are the key constraints and opportunities for enhancing agricultural productivity; and (3) what are the effective mechanisms to improve access to key productivity enhancing technologies, factors and services. Two major points raised in the paper are: (a) improved management of land and water is important for increasing productivity, but equally important is farmers' access to non land and water-related inputs and services, which through their complementary relationships with water, increase the productivity...

La filière française des produits de la mer : aspects technologiques ArchiMer
Knockaert, Camille.
This report summarises the sea produce sector in France from a technical viewpoint. Firstly, the consumption and distribution aspects are approached, followed by a description of fish as primary material for industry, emphasising the constraints related to fishing and aquaculture. Then, the main sectors of transformation are presented as far as the use of by-products and co-products. Finally, information is provided on the transposition of industrial systems into small-scale models, followed by a briet glimpse of the localisation of the French fishing industry.

Manufacturing of agricultural machinery in Bangladesh: opportunities and constraints CIGR Journal
Alam, M. Monjurul; khan, M. I. N.; Saha, Chayan Kumer; Rahman, Anisur; Bhuyian, M. G. K..
Despite numerous limitations, agricultural machinery (AM) manufacturing sub-sector inBangladeshis growing quite satisfactorily and has potential to make substantial contribution to much needed non-farm economic growth, employment generation, mechanization of on and off-farm agricultural activities, and as a whole orientation in the national development.  This study made an attempt to take account of AM manufacturers, importers, traders/wholesalers and retailers, their associations, assess market potential and identify serious bottlenecks associated with this sub-sector.  Stratified random sampling technique was used for identifying respondents in quantitative survey, while focus group discussions (FGDs) and Key Informant Interviews (KIIs) were conducted...

Modelling chance and necessity in natural systems ArchiMer
Planque, Benjamin; Mullon, Christian.
Nearly 30 years ago, emerged the concept of deterministic chaos. With it came sensitivity to initial conditions, nonlinearities, and strange attractors. This constituted a paradigm shift that profoundly altered how numerical modellers approached dynamic systems. It also provided an opportunity to resolve a situation of mutual misunderstanding between scientists and non-scientists about uncertainties and predictability in natural systems. Our proposition is that this issue can be addressed in an original way which involves modelling based on the principles of chance and necessity (CaN). We outline the conceptual and mathematical principles of CaN models and present an application of the model to the Barents Sea food-web. Because CaN models rely on concepts...

Solar Fruit Drying Technologies for small holder farmers in Uganda. A Review of Design Constraints and Solutions CIGR Journal
Wanyama, Joshua.
Solar fruit drying is a technology that is successfully applied on both domestic and commercial scale among smallholder farmers in Uganda. However, existing solar drying technologies are marred with multiple deficiencies such as inefficient conversion of trapped solar radiation to meet required enthalpy, low throughput, long drying times, and inherent difficulty to achieve acceptable hygiene among others. This review examines existing solar drying technologies in Uganda, highlighting design constraints and plausible solutions for supporting the growing fruit drying industry. The common types of solar driers in Uganda are the static-bed box type solar dryer model, the PPI tunnel solar dryer model, the NRI Kawanda cabinet solar dryer, the hybrid tunnel solar...

TECHNICAL INVESTIGATION ON THE METHOD AND CONSTRAINTS ON CASHEW NUTS PROCESSING IN ENUGU STATE CIGR Journal
chikwado, ugwu kenneth.
Technical investigation on the method and constraints on cashew nuts processing in Enugu state of Nigeria was carried out and a survey made involving the use of questionnaire and personal interview during the field trips. The aim was to technically investigate the difficulties encounter in cashew nuts processing in Enugu State and suggest the means of improving on the difficulties. The manual and mechanical methods of processing cashew nuts were investigated. From the result of the survey, it was found that majority of cashew nuts processors visited processed the nuts by manual means and only few were processing mechanically.  The results showed that most of the machines from the mechanical processors visited were not functional.  The results of the survey...
